Diabetes is a condition you wouldn’t wish on anybody and it is very important to seek prompt medical advice if you notice any diabetes signs.  Type 2 diabetes in particular can be prevented by ensuring your live a healthy lifestyle.  Some of the best ways of preventing diabetes include:

 Walking

Research has demonstrated that walking for half an hour every day, six days each week, significantly reduces the chances of developing metabolic syndrome, which is one of the main causes of type 2 diabetes.  It is very important, however, that you discuss your desire to walk for this extent of time with your medical professional, particularly since diabetes can cause problems with the feet due to poor circulation.

Diet

Diabetes is very common in people that are obese and can be fully brought under control by dietary changes.  Dieting when you have diabetes does not mean going on a crash diet to lose weight, but means you need to make a full dietary change.  This needs to be done with the help of a dietician, particularly if you are used to bad eating habits.  A dietician will be able to see what your current eating habits are and how you can best make changes to this whilst ensuring that you receive all the necessary nutrients to sustain a healthy lifestyle.

Lifestyle

The main thing to do when trying to prevent diabetes is to ensure you live a healthy lifestyle.  This is achieved through healthy eating – make sure you get your 5 a day! – and regular exercises.  Having a healthy lifestyle will also keep your BMI in check, which is very important in the prevention of diabetes, as a high BMI greatly increases the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

As you can see, in order to prevent diabetes from occurring, the most important things are taking part in regular exercise and eating a healthy diet – in other words: having a healthy lifestyle.
